Medical Lake emerged from Monday's 2A regional tournament at Pullman's Palouse Ridge golf course with two girls and one boy headed to the state championships at Spanaway Lake next Monday through Wednesday. Megan Lajeunesse's 97 earned her an outright berth with a fourth place finish while last year's state qualifier, Natalie Pendell, earned a spot at state winning a playoff round after shooting a 110. Drew Holmes shot an 80 and became the first ML boy's golfer in two years to earn a trip to state....

  • Wheels already turning for 2012 ML softball

By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter The bats, gloves – and players too -- will have little time to rest following Medical Lake's 10-4 loss to East Valley in the opening round of the 2011 Great Northern League playoffs last Tuesday because summer softball is right around the corner. “That's what is important, to get kids playing in the summer,” head coach John Higgins said at the conclusion of his team's quick exit from post-season. The Cardinals hope that the extra playing time they will have with their Bruchi's-sponsored U-18...

  • Long season comes to quick end in district tennis play for Cardinals

By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter Medical Lake girls' head tennis coach Dawn Eliassen knew going into last week's Great Northern League tennis district tournament that it was likely going to be a long day with little reward. “It was a little rough but we kind of knew that's how the season was going to be as we try to build up the ranks again,” Eliassen said as she watched Clarkston score an easy team win, 67-30 over host Pullman. Medical Lake finished fifth in the team standings with just two points. The top three finishers from...

  • Medical Lake boys have their moments but can't advance in district tennis play

By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter A win and a loss, a win and a loss. That was the familiar pattern that repeated itself for Medical Lake throughout last week's Great Northern League boys' tennis tournament in Pullman. The season ends for the Cardinals and coach Leroy Lemaster in a bit of a disappointing way, with no players earning a return trip to the courts at Washington State University and the regional tournament this Friday and Saturday. “Things did not come out the way we wanted them to, but I am very proud of the effort...

Chaney, who won the shot put with a school-record performance one day earlier, won the discus on Saturday. Cardinals will send three to 2A regionals at Prosser By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter Last week's Great Northern League track championships produced the exact result Medical Lake coaches expected. • Denenny finishes second, Blackhawks boys' tennis third at districts

By JOHN McCALLUM Editor Hard work and experience finally paid off for Cheney tennis player David Denenny. The senior ended the regular season with a 12-1 Great Northern League record, 12-2 overall; a record good enough for a No. 2 seed at last weekend's District 7 tournament where he went 3-1 overall and finished second, advancing to Region 5/6/7 play this Saturday at Washington State University. Denenny's only loss came to top-seeded Drew Adams in the finals, and his championship run helped propel the Blackhawks to a third...

Welts' coming out is a turning point in sports, but the turn isn't that sharp By JOHN McCALLUM Editor The sports world reached a milestone this week when Phoenix Suns president Rick Welts told the world in a New York Times article that he was gay. • Blackhawks repeat as district champions

By JOHN McCALLUM Editor The Cheney High School track and field teams have developed a habit, one opponents likely view as a nasty one. The Blackhawks boys and girls proved they're the team to beat in post-season competition, claiming a pair of titles at the 2A District 7 meet last Thursday and Friday at West Valley High School. It was the fourth consecutive championship for the girls and third for the boys. For Cheney boys' head coach Todd Hering, it was a meet where everything really went according to plan. The Blackhawks...

  • Missed it by that much – Cheney girls' golf misses district title by one-half point

Marye Fuqua only Blackhawk to advance from regionals to state By JOHN McCALLUM Editor Half a point was what kept the Cheney girls' golf team from a first-place trophy at the District 7 2A championship tournament at Deer Park Golf Course last Thursday. The Blackhawks' girls 147 points fell just short of Pullman's 147.5, giving the Greyhounds their title. Four Cheney girls made the cut of 18 for the Region 5/6/7 tournament this week at Pullman's Palouse Ridge course, taking on golfers from the Central Washington Athletic...
