    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Apr 28, 2016

With the regular season's end rapidly approaching, the Cheney High boys' soccer team pretty much knows where they'll start the upcoming Great Northern League playoffs - on the road. Who that opponent will be remains to be seen, and the Blackhawks could have a hand in making that selection. Cheney has suffered three straight loses, the last two coming last week at East Valley, 2-1, and at home against league-leading Pullman, 2-0. Knights' midfielder Chase Binder broke a...

  • Medical Lake soccer drops close contests

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 28, 2016

What’s that old saying about where “close” almost counts? Horseshoes and hand grenades come to mind. The Medical Lake soccer team was close twice last week but still lost Northeast A League matches 2-1 at league-leading Colville, April 19, and 1-0 at Newport, April 21. “We played them strong,” Cardinals’ head coach Zane Higgins said of Colville, which improved to a perfect 6-0 in the NEA (7-0 overall) in a contest where his team had plenty of late chances and its only goal....

The Cheney High boys’ and girls’ golf teams returned to Great Northern League competition in the league tournament at Hangman Valley Golf Course, April 19. The girls finished second with 137 points, six strokes ahead of East Valley (131). Team scores in the girls’ tournament were calculated via the modified Stableford Scoring system where the highest total of points wins instead of the lowest. Cheyenne Marchand finished second overall after shooting a 59, which is 34 higher than her score in the March 22 GNL tourn...

  • Medical Lake roughed up by Lakeside

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 28, 2016

Among other things, Medical Lake head softball coach Tim Blakely learned last week that the Northeast A League’s perennial power, Lakeside, has not necessarily reloaded, but retooled. After a big-bats victory, 15-5, April 18 against Riverside (2-5 NEA 3-7 overall), Medical Lake (3-4, 7-5) saw its modest three-game winning streak getting thumped by Lakeside April 21, 10-0 in six innings and 16-3, a contest that went the distance. “They are a solid, solid team,” Blakely said....

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 28, 2016

The Medical Lake boys’ tennis team ran its win streak to three and a 5-1 league record with a 5-0 win over Freeman, April 21. Kason Bailey played his first match at No. 1 singles, moving up from No. 2, and set the stage with an easy 6-1, 6-1 win. “Kason has been steadily improving at singles and is one of the most steady players we have on the team,” assistant coach Todd Harr said. Kyle Booey had a similar easy time of things at No. 2 with his 6-2, 6-1 win to close out singl...

Ryan Axtell, No. 1 singles, came back to defeat Marcello Scudiero, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. After Axtell dropped the first set, head coach Jesse Erickson suggested he “be a little more patient” and “let his opponent’s shots come to him.” “In those second and third sets, Ryan picked his moments and capitalized when he had an opening,” Erickson said. Mason Van...

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 28, 2016

The road to the Great Northern League postseason continues to be a rocky one for the Cheney High baseball team, who went 0-3 in league play last week, bringing their losing streak to four games. The Blackhawks lost to first-place Clarkston (9-1 GNL, 10-1 overall), 8-2, April 19, then dropped both games of an April 22 doubleheader to second-place West Valley (5-6, 9-6), losing 4-2 in the opener and 3-1 in game two. • Medical Lake track may surprise everyone once again

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 28, 2016

When Medical Lake came in second place last May at the state 1A track meet at Eastern Washington's Roos Field it took many by surprise. The Cardinals finished behind King's High School of Seattle 88-56 in 2015 as they sought to defend the team title they won in 2014, but did so with just six entries, most of whom have now graduated. So as the 2016 season dawned, the Cardinal co-coaches, Gene Blankenship and Steve Keith, figured it would be a year of rebuilding. Well surprise...

  • Lady Blackhawks rally for win over GNL-leading W. Valley

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Apr 28, 2016

If the Cheney High softball team is interested in defining that moment when they learned how to win close games, they couldn’t go wrong with last Friday’s game one of a doubleheader at West Valley. Down 5-1 against the then- Great Northern League leading Eagles, Cheney scored nine runs in the last three innings en route to a 10-8 win. In the fourth, Meghan Krantz and Courtney Johnstone delivered RBI singles to pull Cheney within two. In the fifth, Krantz drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk to score Shelby Melton, and Joh...

  • 'Missionaries' banished from Whitman College

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Apr 28, 2016

So, Whitman College has become the latest school to drop its mascot. In a recent Associated Press story, the Walla Walla-based school announced their sports teams will no longer be called the “Missionaries,” named after missionaries Marcus and Narcissa Whitman who were killed with 12 other settlers by nearby Cayuse Indians in 1847. In the story, reporter Nicholas K. Geranios wrote school officials considered the mascot “noninclusive, imperialistic and incorrectly implied that Whitman, “a private, liberal arts school of abou...

  • Offense, defense have their day

STAFF AND NEWS SERVICE REPORTS|Updated Apr 28, 2016

There's certainly plenty of power in the offense and lots of pop on defense that was on display in the annual Eastern Washington University Red-White football scrimmage, Saturday, April 23 at Roos Field. The Eagle offense, led by sophomore Gage Gubrud and two other experienced quarterbacks fighting for the starting job, piled up 382 yards on 84 plays. But while the offense scored 34 points, the defense had its share of big plays, with seven sacks, eight passes broken up and a...

The Medical Lake School District outlined recent efforts to implement the class-size reductions through the voter-approved initiative I-728, approved by voters in 2000 by a record 72 percent. New uses of the money included a K-3 art teaching position and a part-time kindergarten teacher. The Medical Lakes boys’ tennis team clinched its 14th league...
