  • It's feast or famine for Medical Lake softball

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 23, 2015

The bats were either booming, or deathly quiet last week for the Medical Lake girls' softball team. The week started and ended in a similar fashion - with one-sided losses and dominating pitching performances by the opposition. In those games, the Cardinals were beaten 12-3 by Chewelah in a Northeast A League game April 14 and 11-1 by visiting Lakeland from Rathdrum, Idaho in an April 20 nonleague outing. Sandwiched in between was a doubleheader sweep of Freeman 15-4 and 14-4...

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 23, 2015

Medical Lake head soccer coach Zane Higgins had been looking for consistency in his team. And despite splitting a pair of Northeast A League matches last week, he thinks he’s found it. The Cardinals lost a heartbreaking contest in the final seconds, 3-2 to Lakeside April 14, but turned around April 16 to dominate Riverside 7-0 to close the week. “We played two pretty good games,” Higgins said. “We’ve been having a problem playing really well against good teams and dropping...

  • Lady Blackhawks continue to swing the hot bats

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Apr 23, 2015

Heading into the 2015 season, Cheney High softball head coach Gary Blake knew he had a pretty good hitting team, just not how good. Twelve games in, he’s still a little uncertain if the Lady Blackhawks overall season batting average of .499 is product of great bats, suspect pitching or a combination of both. Off to its best start in years, Cheney kept its perfect season alive with five more wins last week, including Great Northern doubleheader sweeps of Pullman and East Valley. In between, the Lady Blackhawks broke a 5-5 t...

  • Offense dominates second scrimmage

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 23, 2015

Eastern Washington’s spring football scrimmages were never meant to be a best 2 out of 3 series, but that’s the way it will shake out this year. Following the Eagles’ offense dominating performance in last Saturday’s second scrimmage of spring camp, one where the EWU offense rolled up 550 yards, bragging rights for respective sides of the ball will be determined in Saturday’s Red-White scrimmage at Roos Field beginning at 2 p.m. Defense dominated the first inter-squ...

  • Tebow gets fresh start in Philadelphia

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 23, 2015

Just when football fans thought he was gone for good, quarterback Tim Tebow is returning to the NFL. Various news sources announced that the Philadelphia Eagles would sign Tebow. The Eagles confirmed that they signed Tebow to a one-year contract, April 20. A graduate from the University of Florida and a Heisman Trophy winner, Tebow was a first-round NFL draft pick in 2010 — No. 25 overall — and began his professional career with the Denver Broncos, playing nine games his first season. He found success in 2011 after he beg...

  • Cheney soccer feels the heat of competition

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Apr 23, 2015

Cheney boys soccer head coach Mark Kiver knew before the season started that his 2015 Blackhawks would be in a battle this time around for league supremacy, and a battle is just what they're getting. Cheney split a pair of matches last week, getting a late second-half goal to down Clarkston on the road Tuesday, and then being the recipient of similar disappointment as West Valley connected with the net just before the clock hit 80 minutes to post a 1-0 win last Thursday....

  • The story of the cat that got even in the cold

    LUELLA DOW, Contributor|Updated Apr 23, 2015

Some people invite their pet cats into their homes. On a really cold night they give that cat a cozy spot at the foot of the bed. I belong to that tribe of do-gooders. People who don’t like cats never let themselves think of such a thing. We cat lovers usually get a lecture from the “non-thinkers” to remind us. My lecture would come that evening when frost was everywhere. I have two playful kittens that expect to be in the house any time they please. Then there is Omar, five years older, all black, bigger, stronger and treat...

    Updated Apr 23, 2015

As of April 29, 2015, Medical Lake Physical Therapy will be closing its door after 10 proud and successful years providing service to this community. It is with great sadness that we are writing to announce this closure. The staff and I would like to express our sincerest gratitude for your continued support as we make this difficult transition. We did not come to this decision lightly or halfheartedly. It is unfortunate that, as a small business, we are unable to weather the storm driven by big business and the difficult...

  • Crowded halls should cause concern

    Updated Apr 23, 2015

I’m voting “Yes” to support The Cheney School District. I love living in the West Plains Area, I have lived here for 16 years. I have four great kids. They are smart and are fun to be around. Two of my children have graduated from Cheney High School and I currently have one in the high school and one to be there soon. There are several times I need to go to the high school during lunch to pick up my son for appointments. I’m always concerned how crowded the halls are when the students are changing classes. The student...

  • Send the district a message, vote no

The district is back with a request for $44.8 million to cover the first phase of a remodel/new construction for the high school which, when both phases are completed, will total $87.8 million. For the average homeowner this first phase will cost $150 more a year ($3,150 total). “$150 is no more that the cost of an evening out with my daughter,” a teacher argued during an...
