    On April 19, 1886 Spokane County Woman's Christian Temperance Union was organized at Cheney by Mrs. Lucy A. Switzer, with Julia C. Merriman, President. These women advocated for the prohibition of alcohol sales, not because they were prudish, but having witnessed the devastating impact alcohol abuse [generally by men] had on women and families during a time when there were no social safety nets and few rights or resources for women.
