It will take time for Woods to change his ways Lefty Mickelson's emotional win takes Master's spotlight By JOHN McCALLUM Editor No doubt, the best sports story over the weekend had to do with golf. Phil Mickelson's performance in winning his third Master's title was only surpassed by its emotional impact generated by his wife Amy's yearlong battle with breast cancer. While the future prognosis is good, the past year has been difficult, and Amy was only just able to come to the course on Sunday to watch her husband win. There...

By JOHN McCALLUM Editor An offensive explosion propelled the Cheney boys' soccer team to a pair of wins last week, running the Blackhawks winning streak to seven games. Cheney scored virtually at will in a 9-0 win at Colville Tuesday, and overcame windy conditions and a good Clarkston team to score four second-half goals en route to a 5-0 win over the visiting Bantams on Thursday. Cheney wasted little time in getting on the board against the Indians (0-6, 0-6, 0 points), starting with Brett Igbinoba's goal in the second... Full story

  • Gardening in Our Area

Forget the old pains, have faith your plants will thrive By LaVERLE McCANDLESS Contributor “Part of the work of the gardener is ‘forgetting'….If we are to start the new season with vigor and enthusiasm, we must forget the backaches, the scratched arms, the loathsome prevalence of the slugs and other pests, the superiority of our neighbor's sweet peas and certain humiliations suffered from the behavior of certain alpine that turned up their small toes and died in the face of our most earnest ministrations.” L. B. Wilder,...

The local newspaper's raison d'être, three big responsibilities By JOHN HANRON Editor, Methow Valley News If one could boil down the purpose of a community newspaper to three tasks they would likely include 1., informing readers of happenings in their community and afar; 2., acting as a watchdog for government agencies and speaking out against injustice; and 3., keeping the channels of free speech open and active. All of these tasks are important to our free and open society, and we take our responsibilities seriously....

The last sad laughs: A cautious outlook for America after the recession By RICK SLOAN Contributor How much longer will America's ‘gravest recession' last? Of course, no one knows for sure, but a table produced by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which since 1939 has tracked the increase or decrease in non-farm jobs as reported in its monthly Employer Survey, offers a very cautionary note. From its post-Great Depression base of 29.2 million, America added 109.6 million non-farm jobs until reaching the peak figure of 138.8 milli...

By BECKY THOMAS Staff Reporter Spokane will not be part of a countywide ambulance contract, but the Ambulance Service Board has every intention of moving forward without the county's largest city. The board has been working to create a contract with ambulance provider American Medical Response for more than three years in an effort to manage prices. The Spokane City Council voted 4-3 to end the city's membership on the board at their March 22 meeting, citing the already low costs enjoyed by Spokane residents thanks to an AMR...

  • A Cheney Lilac princess in Haiti

  • Medical Lake maintains its ongoing, uphill battle against vandalism

City officials chalk up most of the damage to bored minors, not gangs By RYAN LANCASTER Staff Reporter As Medical Lake Parks and Recreation Department employee Jim Roellich does his morning rounds of the city's parks, he often comes across the fresh tracks of vandals. A decapitated sprinkler head, a scorched restroom dispenser drained of soap, obscene graffiti sprawled across a picnic table – these are annoyances he labels as “just part of the job,” problems to be fixed promptly and then forgotten. In his 11 years with the c...
