  • Cheney officials say a hearing examiner could streamline process, reduce liability

By BECKY THOMAS Staff Reporter Cheney seems poised to jump on the hearing examiner bandwagon. One of the last remaining cities in Spokane County that doesn't use a hearing examiner to decide certain land use and building applications, Cheney could have a contracted hearing examiner in place by this fall. Cheney planner Brett Lucas outlined the advantages of hiring a hearing examiner for the Cheney Planning Commission at a workshop Monday, April 11. These poor people are often tired, fatigued, in a bad mood because they have gained weight, and have been shuffled around many different practitioners. More times than not, they have been “symptom chasing” with their primary care providers, or even worse, relying on the in...

  • Looking Back

1 Years Ago April 19, 2001 After voter approval of Initiative 728 last fall, meetings with district patrons were held with both Cheney and Medical Lake schools to determine how goals of improved education could be met. I-728 was designed to provide funds to lower class size, offer new programs for students and hold additional teacher training. “The Hat Pin Murders,” a thrilling mystery with a local twist By LUELLA DOW Contributor How many times has a person said, “I wish I could write a book.” Or, “I ought to write a book.” But most never do. Here's Joyce Caudel, who left the “always wanted to” theme behind and wrote her book! She said, “I have always liked to read mysteries. I'm a real mystery fan.” So, writing what she liked to read was a natural. Starting a book is almost like waiting for a seed to sprout. One day Caudel began to say to herself, “What if...

That had him and his girls happy. But then came a doubleheader loss Saturday that leaves Higgins perplexed and wondering. The Cardinals got a strong finish last Friday, getting four runs in the sixth and another pair in the seventh to post a 9-3 win at Pullman. Then came the strong start but rough finish Saturday as Medical Lake fell 14-13 and 19-7 at...
