  • New leaders stepping up for Medical Lake baseball

    PAUL DELANEY|Updated Mar 30, 2016

Medical Lake's baseball team is getting the kind of leadership their coach thought was present. But Kerry Kelly would love to get wins, too. The Cardinals finished 1-2 in the first week of Northeast A League play in games played between March 22 – 26. They opened with a 10-3 win at Newport, March 22, but dropped a doubleheader to visiting Colville 6-5 in nine innings and 10-5 in the second game last Saturday at Holliday Field. "When I say the names Brayden Hale, Cole S...

Cheney equalized their Great Northern League record at 2-2 with wins over Clarkston and West Valley March 22 and March 24. Kelby Holland and Noah...

    PAUL DELANEY|Updated Mar 30, 2016

There are a lot of unknowns with the 2016 Medical Lake track team but some of those mysteries went away last Saturday in Wenatchee as the Cardinals ran against teams from six 4A schools in the Ray Cockrum Relays. Cashmere, another 1A school, also competed. Staged at Wenatchee High School on a sunny spring day, the meet produced a pair of impressive individual finishes for Cardinal sprinters Dawson Lack and Lexi Rolan. Lack, a senior, edged Woodinville’s Micah Johnson in the 1...

The Cardinals’ latest big victory came March 24 at East Valley, 14-8. Despite giving up eight runs to the Knights, head coach Tim Blakely wanted to credit his pitchers in his postgame review. “First off I want to give it to both of my pitchers,” Blakely said. Bradyn Wegner pitched...

  • Blackhawks should be 'fun to watch' on the track and field

    John McCallum|Updated Mar 30, 2016

Heading into the 2016 season, Cheney High boys track and field head coach Derek Slaughter had concerns — specifically, concerns about filling gaps in events where the Blackhawks might not have a lot of experience or any athletes to take on the competitive task. Thanks to the addition this year of assistant coaches Tyler Neely and former Blackhawk Emily Stralser, those concerns appear to be alleviated. Slaughter said Neely is already making strides with Cheney’s throwers while Stralser has several high jumpers coming wit...

  • 'It's been a remarkable year in a lot of ways' for EWU womens' hoops

    PAUL DELANEY|Updated Mar 30, 2016

Wendy Schuller likely sleeps a lot better than she did a year ago. Sure, there might be the occasional flashback bad dream, reaction to the disappointment of her Eastern Eagles second consecutive 20-win season being overlooked for postseason play in 2016. Eastern, of course, controlled its destiny after a second-place finish in the Big Sky Conference’s regular season but fell to Idaho, the eventual conference tournament champs, in the semifinals. Still, things are in a b...

  • Flattening out the learning curve

    John McCallum|Updated Mar 30, 2016

For Cheney High softball head coach Gary Blake, the biggest question he faces as he enters his 12th year with the Lady Blackhawks might be this: when will he get to see the full team he envisions. Injuries and medical issues have kept several players from getting into varsity competition, including two of the Lady Blackhawks three leading hitters from the 2015 campaign that ended with a 19-3 record and one win short of state. In fact when Cheney switched home dates with Clarkston and traveled south last Wednesday to take on...
