  • Defense is key to success, failure for Medical Lake girls

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 16, 2014

If there appeared to be a common thread that wove its way through last week's games for Medical Lake's girl's basketball team it would be defense. When the Cardinals won as they did 44-39 at home against Newport they played great D. When they lost, as happened last Tuesday 59-30 at Freeman or Saturday to Lakeside 57-16 in Suncrest, getting stops was the game changer. "We had too many defensive breakdowns, gave them too many open shots and let them beat us down the court on...

  • Cardinals carefully focused as NEA reaches halfway point

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 16, 2014

The focus is straight ahead, but not too far into the future, for the Medical Lake boy's basketball team. Following a 1-2 week in Northeast A League play with losses at Freeman 61-51 last Tuesday and Friday at Lakeside 88-49, wrapped around a win at home 61-55 versus Newport, the Cardinals closed out the first half of the NEA season at Chewelah (1-3 NEA, 4-8 overall) this past Tuesday. And that's as far as ML head coach Arnold Brown wants his players looking ahead. "That's a b...

  • Blackhawks fall to 0-3 in Great Northern

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jan 16, 2014

The Cheney boys' basketball team's first Great Northern League win of 2014 is proving elusive, albeit they weren't facing some of the league's easier competition last weekend. The Blackhawks dropped both their games to fall to 0-3, 55-41 Friday night at East Valley and 62-35 at home to defending state 2A champion and second-ranked Pullman 24 hours later. "I'd argue they're probably the best team we'll see all year," Cheney head coach Chris Dunn said of the Greyhounds. The...

  • Lady Hawks come up short in upset bid of Pullman

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jan 16, 2014

The Cheney girls basketball team lost their first Great Northern League games of the 2014 season, 56-35 Friday night at East Valley and a close 51-41 setback Saturday against Pullman in the league-season home opener. For head coach Shannon Root, the second game was the most disappointing. "I felt like it was a game we should've won, but not quite," she said. Cheney led twice in the opening moments against the Greyhounds, 4-2 and 6-4, but a 7-0 Pullman run helped them...

  • EWU women hope Reese is more kind than the road

STAFF AND NEWS SERVICE REPORTS|Updated Jan 16, 2014

Eastern Washington women’s basketball head coach Wendy Schuller wasn’t too excited about her team having to travel through Western Montana, and that was just the bus ride. Following an 0-2 results after losing a late lead - and the game - 78-74 at Montana State last Saturday, an outcome that came on the heels of an 81-64 loss at Montana last Thursday, the Eagles are glad to be home at Reese Court again. The two-game home stand begins tonight (Jan. 16) against Northern Arizona (0-3 Big Sky, 4-9 overall) at 6 p.m. and fol...

  • Juliana Peña's path to Ultimate Fighting title begins in Dallas

    Al Stover, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 16, 2014

After she became the first female to win “The Ultimate Fighter,” (TUF) Spokane-native Julianna Pena, who trains out of SikJitsu, called out current women’s bantamweight titleholder “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey. The same Rousey who defeated Pena’s friend and coach Miesha Tate on two occasions. The same Rousey who has subdued every single one of her opponents with the armbar. With this historic accomplishment under Pena’s belt, surely the UFC would grant “The Venezuelan Vixen” a championship match against Rousey right off the bat...

  • After busy times, things slow for Card wrestlers

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 16, 2014

The blur that has been the wrestling schedule for Medical Lake in recent weeks is about to slow down. The Cardinals will have matches just once a week through January, starting tonight at 7 p.m. versus Lakeside and comes after a busy holiday followed by competition at the River City Duals last weekend in Post Falls. Medical Lake began last week with a 60-21 loss to Freeman where the Scotties led 24-21 at one point before the defending Northeast A League champs pulled away....

According to head coach Brad Rasmussen, this was a good win for Wessels as Miller is a Tri-State...
