Eastern Washington successfully opened their Big Sky Conference season with a pair of home wins last week and are a perfect 8-0 at Reese Court. Now they hope to take that success on the road and do something they have never done — defeat the Idaho Vandals in league play. The Vandals are 6-1 on their home floor at the Cowan Spectrum inside the football Kibbie Dome. Eastern is 3-4 on the road, but one of those victories came at Indiana. During their previous nine years together...

It was the Cardinals first competition since before Christmas. O'Brien, a senior, suffered his only loss to a West Valley wrestler who was runner-up at state the last three years. Peterson lost to the eventual champion in his weight class who is the No....

  • GSL's Rogers rolls past Medical Lake boys 74-50

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 8, 2015

The Medical Lake boy’s basketball team picked the wrong opponent to try to knock the rust off their wheels prior to the resumption of league play following a two-week hiatus. Upstart and speedy Rogers from the Greater Spokane League used fast starts both to open the game and the second half, and cruised to a humbling 74-50 nonleague victory over the Cardinals last Saturday at Medical Lake. “Coming off break we were kinda’ out of sync,” Medical Lake head coach Arnold Brown s...

  • Mid-game lapse leads to Medical Lake girls loss to Rogers

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 8, 2015

Early in last Saturday’s nonleague girl’s basketball game at home against Rogers of the Greater Spokane League, the Medical Lake Cardinals were able to stay with their 3A opponents. But a brief defensive lapse quickly turned the tide and helped the Pirates earn their first victory of the season 60-35. “We allowed too many easy shots in the paint,” head coach Kyle Lundberg said. “We just lost our defensive focus.” Medical Lake prepares to reenter Northeast A League competition...

  • Nothing is certain anymore in the National Football League

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jan 8, 2015

It’s nice to think that there are specific certainties in life one can count on, so it’s a little disconcerting when something you thought you knew for certain, turns out to be questionable. Make sense? Neither did Sunday’s non-flag call late in the fourth quarter of the Dallas-Detroit NFL wildcard game. I consider myself something of a football expert. I played the game when young and have watched so many games and listened to so many former players, coaches and analysts that if that doesn’t make me an expert, well then it...

  • Lady Blackhawks perfect at West Valley tournament

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jan 8, 2015

Rock and roll legend Meatloaf once sang that “two out of three ain’t bad.” For the Cheney High School girls’ basketball team, that was true with regards to last week’s trifecta of basketball games, although three out of three would have been more preferable. The Lady Blackhawks put together their second stretch of back-to-back wins this season with victories over Riverside and Bonners Ferry in the West Valley Holiday Tournament, but came up short in their second league match up with Clarkston last Saturday night. Playing m...

When Eastern Washington needed to get things in gear in the opening week of Big Sky Conference men's basketball play, the Eagles found the right players in the clutch. Facing an eight point deficit with 5 minutes, 57 seconds remaining against defending champion Weber State on New Years Day, Parker Kelly came to the rescue to deliver all of his six points to salvage an 84-78 win over the Wildcats. Two days later when Idaho State had carved away at Eastern's nine-point lead, tri...

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 8, 2015

The Cheney High wrestling team began the new year on a high note after several athletes placed in the top 5 of their brackets at the Jan. 3 Blackhawk Invitational. As a team Cheney placed seventh out of 16 with 92 points. In the 220-pound final, Michael Ferguson dropped a grueling 6-2 decision to the Mat Classic XXVI state champion, Clarkston's Dylan Beeler. On his way to the finals, Ferguson had back-to-back first-period pins over Royal's Hunter Follett and Kellogg's...

Grandpa Joe and grandma Alice were enjoying a few days with their grandchildren, Carie and Max, while the youngsters’ parents finished Christmas shopping. On this particular day grandpa Joe was in the barn cleaning the stalls. He heard Max calling, “Grandpa Joe, grandpa Joe,” and answered, “I’m in the barn, Max.” He mumbled to himself, “I betcha Max and Carie want a sleigh ride.” The kids were at the barn door before he could say, “You want a ride in the snow? Jump aboard.” Both Max and Carie said at the same time, “Yes, gr...
