  • Understaffed and under budget

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jan 28, 2016

After a 12.37 percent increase in 2014, crime activity in Cheney resumed a downward trend last year, according to end-of-year figures released by the Police Department. While motor vehicle thefts were up slightly from 16 to 17, the largest increase was in drug offenses — up 214.29 percent from seven to 22, m...

  • Eastern women still perfect in Big Sky play

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 28, 2016

A rally that began in the final moments of the third quarter culminated with a last-second winning basket by Delaney Hodgins and resulted in a stunning 69-67 Big Sky Conference women's basketball victory over Montana last Saturday, Jan. 23 at Reese Court. Coupled with an 81-69 win two nights earlier over Montana State, the Bobcats' first loss in conference play, the Eagles emerged from the weekend with a perfect 7-0 league record, have won seven consecutive games and are now...

  • Lady Blackhawks close to earning No. 3 seed

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jan 28, 2016

With a couple wins in its last four games, the Cheney High girls basketball team will likely secure something they haven’t had in four years — a home playoff game. And, at 3-5 in Great Northern League play, 7-9 overall, a couple wins would give the Lady Blackhawks their best league and overall marks since the 2012-2013 team went 4-8 and 8-14. But while the formula looks simple for third-place Cheney, new head coach JT Johnson understands it will be anything but a slam-dunk. The Lady Blackhawks have won four of their last six...

  • LOOKING BACK WITH THE CHENEY HISTORICAL MUSEUM

    Updated Jan 28, 2016

One hundred years ago on Feb. 2, 1916, Monroe Hall, a women's dormitory at Cheney Normal School (now Eastern Washington University) was formally dedicated. It was named for Mrs. Mary Monroe, chairman of the Normal School's board of trustees. Prior to this, all students boarded in private homes, boarding houses, clubs, and "light housekeeping" rooms around Cheney. Those people who made a living from providing room and board to students saw this new dormitory as killing private...

The Eastern Washington women’s basketball team ended a seven-year, 14-game losing streak against the Montana Grizzlies with a 58-56 win at Reese Court that was led by the 14 points of reserve guard B...

  • What are Cruz, Trump supporters thinking?

    Updated Jan 28, 2016

Following the Paris and San Bernardino brutal terrorist attacks, reported to be inspired, if not executed, by the Islamic state (ISIS), polls showed that the ISIS threat was uppermost in people’s minds — and understandably so. Yet when shortly following those terrorist attacks the news was that ISIS is using videos of Donald Trump’s remarks to recruit new followers, Trump’s poll numbers didn’t fall at all. And other Republican presidential candidates such as Ted Cruz, also high in the polls, are contributing similar f...

  • The man who drowned democracy with 'sewer money'

    JOE CONASON, Contributor|Updated Jan 28, 2016

This week marked the anniversary of the Citizens United decision, which exposed American democracy to increasing domination by the country’s very richest and most reactionary figures -modern heirs to those “malefactors of great wealth” condemned by the great Republican Theodore Roosevelt - so it is worth recalling the false promise made by the justice who wrote the majority opinion in that case. Justice Anthony Kennedy masterminded the Supreme Court’s Jan. 21, 2010 decision to undo a century of public-interest regulat...

  • McMorris Rodgers questioned on healthcare stance

    Updated Jan 28, 2016

Sixty times and getting ready for number 61. Republicans have voted 60 times to repeal the law that allows healthcare for all. Cathy McMorris Rodgers stated, in a recent public meeting in Waitsburg, that people should be reflected through their representative. So, with that in mind, a comment and question was asked as to why she continues to vote against the people she represents. If Obamacare were repealed, 81,300 Eastern Washington people, or 11.3 percent of her district, would have no health care at all. Furthermore, the...

  • The EPA has yet another 'Oops we did it again' moment

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 28, 2016

It’s been interesting to follow the water crisis in Flint, Mich. and see where efforts to save a buck have turned to passing the buck. That city of some 100,000 has horrible problems with its water that began when in 2014 city officials chose to change water sources from Lake Huron and the Detroit River to the Flint River. But what has been more intriguing is the finger-pointing and the immediate rush to judgment calling for Republican Gov. Rick Snyder to resign when o...

  • Despite issues, charter schools need room to work

    Updated Jan 28, 2016

Most mid-biennial sessions in Olympia don’t end up producing much in the way of substantial, earth-shattering legislation. But thanks to a pair of Washington State Supreme Court decisions, this year’s January – March legislative get together might be different. Those two decisions are regarding K-12 education. One is 2012’s McCleary verdict. Enough said. The other is last September’s ruling nullifying Initiative 1240, which was narrowly approved by 50.69 percent of voters in 2012 creating up to 40 charter schools in the st...

  • Coffee is on at E-lix-ir Espresso

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 28, 2016

A patch of ground that sat for years with a vacant building and grass growing under it has been perked up - literally. E-lix-ir Espresso, located at 10427 Aero Road south of Interstate 90 at the 272 exit has been brewing coffee and selling baked goods since October. "Opening a stand of my own was something I always wanted to do," owner Alena Stephenson said. "We opened Oct. 12 and we were busy from day-one." Involved in coffee selling for the last eight years, Stephenson has...

Jorgenson is experiencing health issues, has been absent from meetings the past several months and is currently at Cheney Care Center. • Airway Heights council hears STA vote appeal

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jan 28, 2016

Airway Heights City Council members heard a request for supporting mass transit at their Jan. 25 study session from a different source — one of their West Plains neighbors. Cheney Mayor Tom Trulove addressed the council about a second attempt by the Spokane Transit Authority at running a ballot measure to increase its sale tax and use authority to fund transportation improvements in the county. The difference this time is the amount STA plans to ask for is lower, 2/10ths of 1 percent versus last April’s 3/10ths, and two hig...

  • McMorris Rodgers fields comments

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jan 28, 2016

Congressional 5th District Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers likes to refer to her town-hall-style meetings as "Conversations with Cathy." They're aptly named, as anyone who attended the latest installment Jan. 22 at Cheney's Wren Pierson Community Center might attest, although the conversations are a bit more emphatically delivered than normal coffee talk might be. McMorris Rodgers fielded comments from a packed room regarding everything from campaign finance reform to...
