Wasting disease found in harvested deer

SPOKANE — State Department of Fish and Wildlife has confirmed a second case of chronic wasting disease in a white-tailed deer harvested by a hunter during the opening weekend of the modern firearm deer season. 

The hunter harvested the deer close in the Fairwood area of Spokane County, close to where the state’s first case of the disease was confirmed this summer.

“Given the location where this deer was harvested — just north of the initial disease detection, approximately 5 miles north and west of Highway 395 — this positive test result is not a complete surprise,” agency Wildlife Science Div...
