CHENEY - Eastern Washington University received $12 million in funding in the state budget for 2023-25 for infrastructure repairs at Rozell plant and throughout the campus.

Every two years, the senior engineer on campus will submit a capital budget request for infrastructure upgrade projects, according to Steve Schmedding, engineer and senior project manager at the construction planning department.

These requests are related to Rozell plant and infrastructure on campus in general. According to Schmedding, the most current request included funds to replace old equipment such as a boiler and chillers, which are in the plant itself, and high-voltage electrical components throughout campus.

"I requested $15 million originally, but it looks like I'm going to get $12, which is great, and it should cover most of the capital projects that I have been trying to get repaired." Schmedding said.

Rozell plant is a central energy plant containing five boilers with an average age of 45 years. The plant produces steam which is distributed throughout the campus tunnel system for heating and hot water.
