CHENEY —Salnave Elementary School was locked down and the area closed off during a standoff in the 100 block of Pineview Place on Wednesday, April 19.

Daniel Devenport, man 51, was taken into custody without incident after near three hours.

According to police, officers responded to the call about 1:30 p.m. after receiving a tip that a man was armed with guns and a knife, and threatening to kill himself.

The man, later identified as Daniel Devenport, had barricaded himself in a home and refused to come out, police said. Devenport and his wife wrestled over a gun which he had threatened to hurt himself with, according to police.

Roadblocks were set up scene and a shelter-in-place order was implemented at the nearby elementary school, 1015 Salnave Road.

Police were assisted by the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office Behavioral Health Unit, which was able to successfully negotiate with Deputy Pandell who eventually exited the residence peacefully. Devenport was taken into custody and transported to a Spokane hospital for a mental health evaluation.

Devenport was charged with reckless endangerment after he was involuntarily committed at Sacred Heart hospital. He was released and charges were referred to the city municipal court, according to police.
