Funding for Palouse to Cascades trail approved

Senate capital budget funding passed

OLYMPIA — The governor’s proposed 2023-25 state capital budget, which included a nearly $2.5 million funding ward for the Palouse to Cascades Trail from Malden to Kenova, passed April 22.

According to the Office of Financial Managment, the Kittitas railroad depot has structural problems that require a new foundation and other improvements.

This funding will provide for the renovation of the depot and provides American’s with Disabilities Act-accessible amenities for visitors and provides facilities available for a future vendor lease, according to the budget.

Site improvements include asphalt paving of the current gravel parking lot, parking-space striping and American’s with Disabilities Act signing, and improvements to entrances and exits to adjoining public roads.

Improvements to the structure include repair/replacement of the foundation and preservation of select historical features. ADA-accessible bathrooms will also be constructed.

According to the Recreation and Conservation fact sheet which was filed with a grant request in 2022, The trail is part of the Great American Rail Trail across the United States, and the corridor stretches more than 285 miles across Washington.
