Spokane Transit presents Cheney transportation plans to the council

CHENEY — The City Council heard a presentation from Spokane Transit about their Connect 2035 10-year strategic plan for Cheney transit during a regular meeting March 28.

The strategic plan includes two primary phases, the first of which was completed in late 2022. Phase one involved community engagement which helped the transit authority to revise its goals and plans for Cheney’s needs.

Phase two will officially begin in July 2023 and will stretch out into 2024. The purpose of this plan is to further evaluate the needs of the community, to improve transit in the region overall, and to develop program initiatives and feasible actions.

According to a phase on report, users of public transit want buses to arrive more frequently. Additionally, users want a wider range of destinations, expanded travel hours, and for Spokane Transit to be more determined to be a leader in sustainable, environmentally friendly practices.

The final stage of plan development will begin sometime in 2024, and will implement all the date from the fact-finding and community engagement phases.

“From my perspective, looking at the west plains and how we’re coming together, keeping in mind what the west plains will look like in the next 10-20 years is important.” Mayor Chris Grover said.
