National farm workers awareness week

CHENEY — Eastern Washington University will be hosting the annual farm workers awareness week, taking place between March 24 and April 7.

Donation bins will be located on the second floor of the PUB on the university campus and will be accessible to the public between 10a.m. and 3p.m.

Additionally, the Cesar Chavez Blood Drive will be in operation during this time on the first floor of the PUB in the NCR room.

Cheney Congregational continues series

CHENEY — The Congregational Church is continuing its “Holy in the Ordinary” series in which the congregation explores the concepts of encountering the divine in every-day life.

Church administrator Carol Campbell said that there is a team-up happening with United Methodist Church for mid-week bible study program taking place on Thursdays.

Additionally on Thursday mornings, Meals on Wheels will be at the United Methodist Church offering meals to seniors 60 years of age or older.

“We welcome you to join us on Sunday mornings for in-person worship at 10am and fellowship time afterwards.” Campbell said. Masks are optional and children are offered their own “Discovery Team Time” during services.

Cheney school district presents award

AIRWAY HEIGHTS — Interim kitchen lead at Sunset Elementary Rita Whittaker was named

Cheney Public Schools’ Classified Employee of the Year during a surprise announcement at Sunset

Elementary on Wednesday, March 15.

Whittaker is the Kitchen Lead at Westwood Middle School, but took the interim position at Sunset after a gap in the employee roster appeared last year.

Whittaker was nominated for this award by one colleage, Kellisa Kulm, Nutrition Services Interim Director, and by the Westwood Administrative Team.

“Rita strives to support the needs of all our students because she truly cares about them. Rita also creates a

caring work environment in the kitchen for her nutrition services staff to lift them up personally and professionally.” A team representative wrote.

Cheney Community Church

CHENEY — The Church will be celebrating the Easter season starting with a baptism on Sunday March 26th.

Palm Sunday, also called communion Sunday will be April 2 and begins at 10a.m.

Good Friday is April 7 and service will be at the Four Lakes Community Church, located at 10311 S Spokane Street, at 6:30p.m.

Church administrator Carol Campbell said that the Son Rise service will be at the Hien’s residence, address available upon inquiry, at 6a.m. Campbell encourages the attendees to carpool and save gas.

Easter Sunday breakfast will be served at the church from 8:30a.m.– 9:45a.m.

Easter service will be conducted on April 9 at 10a.m.

Cheney Book Club meeting

CHENEY — The book club will meet on March 28 at 6:60p.m. in the city library meeting room at 610 First Street. The book being discussed this week is Josephine’s Last Dance. Discussion will also include ideas for upcoming book titles.
