Cheney’s boys’ basketball team remained winless in 2023 following a pair of Greater Spokane League losses last week.
The Blackhawks lost a heartbreaker 51-49 at home to Mead, Jan. 17 and to Lewis and Clark 44-31, Jan. 20, extending their losing streak to six games and they remain winless, 0-4 in GSL play and 5-9 overall.
“We put ourselves in a great position to win that game and it didn’t go our way,” head coach Travis Peevey wrote in an email.
The Blackhawks led 27-25 at the half but could not recover enough from a bad third quarter where they were outscored 13-7. “Mead is a good team that plays together and is proving it in league play,” Peevey said. The Panthers are 3-1 in GSL play, 7-7 overall.
Jakeb Vallance led the Blackhawks with 16 points, the lone Cheney played in double figures. Evan Stinson and Gentz Hilburn have been out of the lineup for undisclosed reasons.
Second half woes have dogged Cheney all season and nothing changed against Lewis and Clark (1-3, 5-9). Tied 20-20 at half, the Tigers broke away with a 10-2 edge in the third quarter and 14-9 advantage in the fourth.
Vallance’s 13 points led Cheney while Liam Carver had eight.
“We have been in a lot of games going into halftime, learning how to finish games and play a full four quarters has been the story for us in league play,” Peevey explained.
The Blackhawks had a pair of home games, against Ridgeline (0-4 6-8) Jan. 24 and Mt. Spokane, (4-0, 13-1), Friday Jan. 27 at 7 p.m. which is Senior Night.
“We are looking forward to honoring those guys that have been a big part of this program for four years,” Peevey said.
