Top teams mean trouble for ML girls

Medical Lake girls’ basketball head coach Brett Ward offered a bit of perspective when asked about recent games his team has played that have resulted in a four-game losing streak.

The most recent setbacks came last week where Freeman (6-0 NEA, 12-2 overall) topped Medical Lake 54-25, Jan. 10 and Lakeside (4-2, 9-4) prevailed 67-40 Jan. 13.

“The last four teams we’ve played are top 15 teams in the state,” Ward wrote in an email. “The great thing for us is we get to really see what we need to get better at to be one of those top teams,” which are experienced, senior-laden squads.

Medical Lake (2-4, 5-8) looked up from a seemingly bottomless pit at Freeman where they trailed 39-5 at halftime following being shutout 20-0 in the second quarter. “(It’s) tough in the moment, but long term we can learn a lot from those games.”

Delaney Gunther led all scorers with 16 points. “The first half was rough against Freeman, they really asserted their will on us,” Ward said.

“We dug ourselves an early hole vs. Lakeside as well,” Ward noted. Charde Luat scored 11 and Natalie Flavel “Had her best game of the year with 10 points.” Additionally, Cassidy Fitzpatrick hit a couple of threes and has been very reliable on defense.

Round two of Northeast A League play begins this week. Newport (2-4, 3-8) visits Medical Lake, Jan. 20 and the Cards are Riverside (0-6, 0-11) Jan. 21. Both contests begin at 5:45 p.m.
