Cheney is Scholastic Cup leader through fall

After the fall sports season, Cheney High School is in first place for the Scholastic Cup for 3A schools in the state of Washington.

The Scholastic Cup recognizes performance in the classroom as well as on the playing surface. Schools that finish at the top of their respective classifications in state athletic competition receive points, as do schools that finish at the top in team academic performance. At the end of the year, the school with the most points in their classification will be awarded the prestigious Scholastic Cup.

“For Cheney High School, most of our success in this initial rankings are due to our students performing well in the classroom,” Blackhawks’ athletic director Tim Kennedy wrote in an email.

“Both our boys and girls’ cross country teams were academic state champions, which is a huge achievement,” he added. The boys earned top marks with a combined 3.976 GPA, while the girls did even better with a 4.0 GPA.

Other notable academic achievements included girls soccer, second, football third, slowpitch softball was fourth and girls swim/dive landed in sixth.

“These amazing results show that our student-athletes are doing well in the classroom, in addition to our sports competitions,” Kennedy said. “We did earn some competition points, from our cross country team placements at the state tournament, as the boys finished in eighth and the girls in 12th.

The highest Scholastic Cup finish for Cheney was in the 2017-18 school year, when they finished in 15th place while still in the 2A classification.
