BASKETBALL:

Eastern women improve to 3-0

With two victories last week, the Eastern Washington women’s basketball team has now started 3-0 for the first time since the 2006-07 season.

The Eagles concluded a 2-0 week with a rare win at Boise State, 83-74 on Nov. 11. The win ended an eight-game losing streak against the Broncos. They then got a clutch buzzer-beater layup from Jamie Loera in a 62-60 win over Southern Utah, Nov. 14 at Reese Court.

In Boise, Jaydia Martin led the team with 17 points, tying for the game high. Aaliyah Alexander added 14 points while Loera and Jacinta Buckley each had 11.

Against former Big Sky foe, Southern Utah, Jaydia Martin was the game’s high scorer with 16 points. Buckley finished with 13 points with Milly Knowles adding 10.

Eastern travels to Corvallis and plays Oregon State on Thursday, Nov. 17.

Eagle men win first game

The Eastern Washington men’s basketball team will return to Cheney with more than the usual souvenirs from a trip to Hawaii.

With Angelo Allegri scoring 14 points, Eastern came away with its first win of the season, 60-52 over Mississippi Valley State Nov. 14 in the final of three games in the Outrigger Rainbow Classic in Honolulu, Hawai’i. Earlier, the Eagles fell to the Yale Bulldogs 74-60 (Nov. 11) and hosts, the Hawai’i Rainbows 71-51 (Nov. 13).

In the opener vs. Yale, Eastern had a one-point lead at halftime, but the Bulldogs surged in the second 20 minutes. Steele Venters led Eastern with 15 points and Ethan Price added 14.

Hawai’i took advantage of scoring 20 points off 16 Eastern turnovers in their win. Allegri and Cedric Coward each scored 10 points in the game.

In the final game of the tourney played at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center, Allegri was one of three Eagles to score in double figures, as Tyreese Davis had 14 and Deon Stroud added 11.

Eastern returns “home” for its next game vs. Washington State on Nov. 21 at Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena.

CROSS COUNTRY:

Eastern wraps season at West Regional

The Eastern Washington University men’s and women’s cross country teams competed in the 6K and 10K races in University Place, Wash. Nov. 11 to conclude their seasons.

The men finished 23rd overall and the women 24th with Stanford University winning both team races.  

The men were led by sophomore Noah Hasselblad who finished with a time of 30 minutes,10.5 seconds to set the program record for the men’s 10K. He finished in 84th, four spots above his finish from last year.

For the women, freshman Faith Martinez led the team and finished 123rd with a time of 21.15.9 with redshirt-freshman Lilly Fetzer following behind clocking in at a time of 21.18.2 finishing 126th on the 6K Chambers Bay course.

VOLLEYBALL:

Eagles win on the road

Eastern Washington won its final road volleyball match Nov. 12 at Portland State 3-1 to finish 1-1 for the week following a 3-0 loss at Sac State Nov. 10.

Lindsey Russell recorded 37 assists and two kills on vs. the Vikings. Russell now has 18 games this season with 30 or more assists. Ellie Garrett had her first double digit dig game of the season with a career high 15.

Makenna Collins had a game-high, 12 digs against Sac State for the Eagles (5-9 in the Big Sky, 10-16 overall) who return to Reese Court to conclude regular season play.

Eastern faces Northern Colorado Friday, Nov. 18 at 6 p.m. and Northern Arizona on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. for senior night. Eastern can secure a spot in the Big Sky Tournament with a win in one of the two matches.
