WASHINGTON, D.C. —  Fifth Congressional District Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers helped introduce the American Confidence in Elections Act, comprehensive legislation to strengthen election integrity and restore confidence in the voting process.

“I believe we must restore trust and confidence in our election system,”  Rodgers said. “Every American – Republican, Democrat, and Independent – deserves to know that their vote is counted when they go to the polling place or mail in their ballot. This legislation takes a huge step towards shoring up our free and fair elections by empowering states to put in place long-overdue voter ID requirements, establishing standards for mail-in voting, and deterring any foreign interference.

This is a common sense solution that we should all be able to rally behind as Americans.”

According to McMorris Rodgers, R-Spokane, the bill would help states use the REAL ID act to ensure only American citizens vote, allow states to update and maintain voter rolls and establish postal standards for mail-in ballots.

It would also terminate and prevent any funds from being spent on any so-called disinformation governance board.

The bill was announced just days before a candidate for Washington’s 4th Congressional District filed a complaint about the early posting of election results in the Aug. 2 primary.

Former gubernatorial candidate Loren Culp, a former Republic police chief who now lives in Moses Lake, filed a complaint Monday with the Yakima Police Department after a daily newspaper in Yakima posted election returns Sunday.

The problem was the tallies were reported more than two days before ballots are to be counted.

Culp is challenging longtime politician Dan Newhouse, R-Sunnyside. The posted results showed Newhouse winning, followed by Democrat Don White and Republican Jerrod Sessler.

The other candidates in the race had no numbers in the listing. they include Benancio “Benny” Garcia III, Jacek Kobiesa, Brad Klippert and Corey Gibson.

The Top 2 candidates in the Aug 2. primary advance to the Nov. 8 general election.

Culp grabbed a screen of the posting; the newspaper pulled down the numbers by the next morning.

“I want to know where those numbers came from because this looks like election tampering,” Culp said. “I don’t know if this was done by mistake or was a deliberate intent to influence voters. What I do know is that someone needs to explain what happened.”

Culp is endorsed by former president Donald Trump.

Four-term incumbent, Newhouse, who voted to impeach Trump in January 2021. Because of his support of impeachment, Newhouse has been censured by most Republican committees in the 4th Congressional District, which overwhelmingly supported Trump in the 2020 presidential election.
