CHENEY—The Summer Hawks continue to build momentum heading toward the district playoff, having won four of their last six games, outscoring opponents 50-30.

Cheney 14

Reardan 1

Cheney dominated twin bill action against Reardan on Tuesday, July 5, to push their win streak to three games.

The Summer Hawks got it going early, bringing three runs across the dish in the bottom of the first inning. Cheney then exploded for nine runs in the home half of the second on the strength of a two-run triple to center field by Tyler Ashcroft to make it 12–0 Summer Hawks.

Cheney added two at the bottom of the third to push the score to 14-0.

Reardan hung a run on the board in the top of the fourth to avoid the shutout.

Jacob Ulrich went the distance on the bump, allowing one run off three hits, fanning seven Indians and walking one.

Cheney 8

Reardan 4

Game two of the doubleheader wasn’t as close as the final score indicated. Reardan took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the first inning, and Cheney answered with two runs to make it 2-1 Summer Hawks.

Cheney added a run in the bottom of the third to make it 3-1, then pushed three across the plate in the fifth to widen the gap to 6-1.

The Indians posted three on the board in the top of the sixth to get back in it, 6-4. The Summer Hawks responded with two in the bottom of the frame to win it convincingly, 8-4.

Miles Hoover wielded the big stick for Cheney, going 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and three RBI. Tank Best got the start and the win on the mound throwing four solid innings of two-hit ball and striking out five Indians.

“We played solid games–played solid defense against Reardan,” coach Rob Beamer said. “The team is also learning how to have an approach at the plate and its showing—we just need to keep up the same effort for the remaining six games.”

Summer Hawks 2,12

Pirates 0, 1

The Summer Hawks steamrolled the Pirates in doubleheader action Friday, July 8, taking the opening game 2-0 and the nightcap, 12-1. Tate Heuschkel pitched a two-hit complete-game shutout in Game 1 while fanning six Pirates.

Cheney got all the runs the team needed in the bottom of the first inning off a two-run single from Miles Hoover. Chris Wilson, Heuschkel and Coleman Randles also singled in the ball game.

The second game of the doubleheader was all Cheney, although neither team played flawlessly as both squads combined for nine errors, four of which were committed by the Summer Hawks.

Cheney led 3–0 heading into the bottom of the third inning. The Pirates got one back in the bottom of the frame, and then it was all Summer Hawks after that, as the team posted three runs on the board in the fourth inning and added six in the top of the fifth to run away with it.

Three Cheney batters had outstanding plate appearances. Jace Vega was a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish with two RBI and two runs scored.

Marcus Belarde had two hits in four at-bats with two RBI and two runs scored. Tyler Ashcroft went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored. Miles Hoover was impressive on the bump, tossing a three-hitter and striking out three Pirates in five innings of work.

“Miles and Tate both had dominating stuff and had complete games in under 80 pitches,” Coach Rob Beamer said. “To accomplish that feat, our defense had to turn in a solid effort and did..”

Cheney was back on the diamond Tuesday for a twill bill with Asotin. The results were not available at press time. Look for the recap in the July 21 edition of the Free Press.
