CHENEY—The Summer Hawks got what the doctor ordered in a dominating 9-1 win over West Valley on Sunday, July 3, to end a seven-game losing streak. Tyler Ashcroft led the Cheney attack from the plate and the bump, going 2-for-3 with a triple and 2 RBI and tossing a masterful five-inning game, allowing one run off four hits and fanning nine batters.

“Ty is just a great competitor,” Coach Rob Beamer said. “You know you’ll get all he has on the mound and at the dish.”

The Cheney bats were sizzling from the get-go as the Summer Hawks pounded out four first-inning singles producing five early runs. West Valley got one back in the bottom of the inning to close the gap to 5-1.

Cheney kept its foot on the accelerator, adding three more runs in the second inning to take a commanding 8-1 lead. The Summer Hawks added one more for good measure in the top of the fourth to win it going away.

“We were the youngest team in our Pod at the Wood Bat Classic. We lost the first game 4-3 and then played the Peppers from Yakima and lost 9-8. That game was called in the 6th due to a time limit,” Beamer said. “There’s no doubt we would’ve pulled that one out as we had momentum on our side. As long as we keep battling, we’ll be fine.”

Cheney matched up with Reardan in doubleheader action, looking for back-to-back-to-back wins on Tuesday. The game results were not available at press time. Look for the recap in the July 14 edition of the Free Press.

The Summer Hawks begin Spokane American League Baseball District play on July 15.
