Second-hand store open in downtown Cheney

CHENEY-Somethings in this world are genuinely timeless. At Flor Inmortal, a new business located in the heart of downtown Cheney, they believe that everything has the potential to be just that. The shop opened for business on May 6.

"Flor Inmortal' is Spanish for 'immortal flower," Owner Kim Davis said. "It's an ode to the fact that things can be forever if we take good care of it."

Davis owns the store with her husband, Gareth. The couple frequently brings in "new" vintage items to maintain a variety of inventory.

"The front of the store is vintage housewares," Davis said. "I specialize in religious things that are vintage. We also have vintage bar ware and the back room is focused more on pop culture items."

Keeping students at Eastern Washington University (EWU) in mind, Davis also has a section for second-hand and vintage clothing for the generation that can't get enough of the thrifting scene.

The featured collection at Flor Inmortal is a joint effort by Davis, her husband and fellow vintage lovers who donate items to her shop.

"I hand curate this collection," Davis said. "Sometimes people might give me things, or go to vintage stores and estate sales. To find stuff like this, you have to know what you're looking for."

Learning new things keeps Davis passionate about vintage and her new small business. She said that seeing something and searching for the details about who made it and where and what era it comes from is an essential part of vintage shopping.

Davis said the goal is to bring something new into the downtown scene and help make Cheney a destination for people looking for a relaxing day out.

"I really believe in Cheney and that this is a place that can thrive," she said. "I'd love to see it become a getaway place where people can come to shop and eat for the day."

Davis and her husband both work full-time jobs. Flor Inmortal has been an opportunity for them to dedicate time to what they are most passionate about, vintage.

"My husband and I have a similar taste in what we want in the store," Davis said. "This is a creative outlet for me. I have always valued things from the past. So this has been an opportunity to surround me with beautiful things."

Flor Inmortal is open Friday and Saturdays from 10 a.m.–7 p.m. and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

"In August we're hoping to be open seven days a week," Davis said.
