CHENEY— Local organizations are coming together through different events over the Memorial Day weekend to honor the many lives lost in the nation’s wars.
American Legion Post 72 is setting up a “Poppy” table at 9a.m.-3p.m. outside of Mitchell’s Harvest Foods and Yokes Market and Ace Hardware on Saturday, May 28.
Members will hand out paper poppy flowers for people to wear on Memorial Day. The poppy symbolizes remembrance and hope for a positive future and peaceful world.
Poppies symbolize a show of support for the Armed Forces community, those currently serving, and ex-military personnel and their families.
The tradition of using the poppy flower as a symbol of remembrance started when John McCrae, a Canadian volunteer in WWI, noticed red poppies still sprouting beneath battlefield debris. He later wrote a poem ‘In Flanders Field’ about it.
All donations collected at this event benefit the Post 72 Veteran’s Fund.
Post 72 will also be hosting a memorial ceremony at Veteran’s Park in Cheney at 10a.m. on Monday, May 30.
