AIRWAY HEIGHTS – After initially hearing about the proposal during the April 25 study session, council was ready to take action on the potential integration of an electric scooter and bike system for the city.
According to Principal Planner Heather Trautman, the idea is to improve mobility for people that may not have the same access to public mobility as others. During her initial description on April 25, she said there is a population in the city that is underserved in that capacity, but hopes that partnering with Lime to provide mobility equipment can change that.
“This agreement is a broad agreement which includes discussions about how many units will be retained by the city,” she said. “And key components such as how accessible to our commuters that may be low income, making sure they are not obstructing the right of way, and that they are not left out in poor weather.
“It is a great program that will allow members of our community to access the services they need.”
Trautman described the benefits as going further, as many people will be able to commute without having to rely on a vehicle. She hinted this could possibly have a positive impact on the traffic, congestion, and pollution in the city. The city will also receive $10,000 for having the personal transit devices available. Those funds will be utilized in future mobility discussions and projects.
“I believe there are a lot of positives behind a contract like this with Lime,” Mayor Larry Bowman said after hearing Trautman’s presentation. “Especially for those who can’t necessarily afford other transportation services, this can be an affordable option.”
Davin Perry made a motion, and after a quick second it was carried unanimously by members of council.
Additional news stemming from the meeting includes a couple of upcoming council vacancies as Art Bubb noted he will be resigning. His last meeting will be on May 9.
“I thank everybody that has helped me learn and understand the job,” Bubb said. “It’s been a wonderful time working with everyone, but it’s time for me to say au revoir.”
This announcement comes one week after Councilman Sonny Weathers announced his upcoming resignation. Weathers said he will be moving out of the city limits and will have to thus forfeit his seat.
Council has since been discussing proper procedures with regards to filling those positions moving forward.
