Cheney comes from behind to beat Ferris

CHENEY- Maddie McDowell fanned 10 Saxons and the Blackhawks pulled out a 3-2 comeback win over Ferris at Cheney High School Monday afternoon. It's the fourth consecutive league victory for the team that finds itself at the top of the GSL standings with a 4-0 record.

"It was a good fastpitch softball game," Head Coach Gary Blake said. "They went up 2-1, and we scored two in the bottom of the sixth and shut them down in the seventh inning."

The game was a classic pitcher's duel that produced 21 strikeouts, 12 through the first three innings.

Cheney put the initial run on the board in the home half of the third on back-to-back bunt singles by Sedona Erickson and Rhyan Kucirka and a swinging strikeout that got past the Saxon catcher scoring Erickson, who had just stole third base.

Ferris evened it 1-all in the top of the fourth and went up 2-1 in the top of the fifth. Cheney answered with a pair of runs in the sixth to win it.

The Blackhawks opened league play with a 17-0 shellacking of Lewis & Clark on March 22, shut out Central Valley 14-0 on the road on March 22, and pulled out a 10-9 win at Mead High on March 24.

Cheney hit the road to Mt. Spokane on Wednesday, March 30, to take on the Wildcats. The results of the game were not available at press time. The Blackhawks host University High at 4 p.m. on Thursday, March 31.
