CHENEY – Cheney High School is officially searching for a new principal as of Feb.15. This search includes input from middle school and high school students from around the district via a Google survey that is available from the school district until March 3.
“It is common practice, especially at the secondary level, to include students as part of the interview process for new administrators and teachers,”Kelly Niccolls, teaching and learning assistant director said in an email to the Cheney Free Press. “Students are the center of everything we do in education. We value student voice and participation in their learning thus, student feedback was incorporated in the hiring process,”
The point of the survey is to harvest student-generated data that could help inform the applicant screening and interview process. So while they don’t get say in the actual applicant, they do have a say in the type of person that will lead their school into the future.
The survey is eight questions, three of which are multiple choice and the other five are open response. The first multiple choice questions ask what grade the survey taker is in. The next question asks what the number one priority of the next principal should be, and answers include improving the learning experience for students, schools safety and extra-curricular activities.
Another question asks what qualities their next principal should exhibit with answers ranging from honesty, to being approachable, putting student needs first, and getting involved in school activities. There is a question about the biggest challenges the next principal will face and even gives students a chance to be included in the actual interview process.
Cheney Free Press reached out to Cheney High School’s current principal Troy Heuett for comment about the principal search but he declined to do so at this time.
Potential applicants have until March 11 to submit their resume and relevant application materials. The initial rounds of interviews will start on March 21 with the final round of interviews wrapping up the week of March 28. The final selection will be made on April 1.
