Well kids, I am here to tell you we must make it right with our non-human partners.
You, my friends, are the capable and creative Geniuses who have inherited the planet.
My generation, I am sad to say, screwed up.
Yes, your parents, grandparents and I are responsible for this environmentally challenged earth.
What we have bestowed upon you is unfair.
But what now are you going to do about it?
Since you were children we tried to teach you the philosophy of “give and take.” However, we neglected to instill in you the necessity of the part of the equation, Give.
Equably give, that is.
Think about forests, grasslands, fungi and yes, soil. What have we given back for these gifts; smokestacks, stripped, eradicated, eroded landscapes, asphalt, land left bare to die and water unfit to drink?
Not a fair balance to the give and take- take and give equation.
Because we share this planet with our vulnerable non-human partners we must incorporate a philosophy of reciprocation.
You are the most knowledgeable generation our civilization has known.
I pray you are the smartest.
Responsibility comes with learning. The more you learn, the more you can do. And much needs to be done.
Issues desperate to be addressed and problems to be solved begin with the priority of the development of new renewable sources of energy.
Restoration of palatable water sources, more stringent regulations on air quality, are right up there with number one.
This is the reason for your education. You might think it is all about the mighty paycheck but it is really so you can make a difference.
And you can, you can honestly make a difference. Your combined efforts can provide the world you want for your children.
Indigenous people knew their non-human partners, water, soil, and air as not only benefactors, but respected members of their societies.
It would do us well to incorporate this attitude regarding the gifts of our resources today.
