Cardinals fall short against Crimson Hawks

MEDICAL LAKE – The powerhouse Colville Crimson Hawks traveled to Medical Lake on January 25, and the Cardinal boys’ and girls’ varsity teams both fell short to Colville.

The Cardinal boys did everything they could to keep the game close against the 9-2 Crimson Hawks, and put enough defensive pressure on Colville to slow their high octane offense. In the end the Cardinals fell short 59-55.

Although Medical Lake did commit 15 fouls on the night, Colville struggled from the line only making 4 of 15 free throws. Medical Lake shot an impressive 75 percent at the line making 9 of 12 foul shots.

Eugene Haas III led the Cardinals’ scoring effort with 17 points on the night, and Haas also kept the ball moving with several assists.

Noah Keister joined Haas in scoring double digits, and helped keep the perimeter defensive pressure up.

Momentum throughout the game swayed back and forth, and neither team was able to run away. The score was tied at 41 going into the final quarter of the game, and Colville pulled ahead with a free throw from Brock Weilep, and Eugene Haas answered with a field goal to put the Cardinals up by one.

The Crimson Hawks pulled away over halfway through the fourth with a series that led to a bucket made by Colville’s Jeremiah Cameron, and two more from his teammate Rhett Foulkes. These baskets gave Colville enough of a lead to hold on and win the game.

The Crimson Hawk boys team improved to 10-2 while Medical Lake fell to 6-7 on the season.

The lady Cardinals faced an equally dominant Crimson Hawk team that went into the game with 10 wins and no losses.

The Lady Cardinals struggled a bit in the first quarter and fell behind, but they continued to fight to stay in the game.

Ellie Haas led the Lady Cardinals in scoring with 11 points, and moved the ball well also. The whole team moved the ball effectively ensuring nearly everyone on the team scored points.

Medical Lake forced a lot of fouls too as the team shot 18 free throws on the night and converting 11 of them.

Medical Lake trailed by as many as 13 points in the second quarter, and weren’t able to overcome that deficit although they tried.

The Crimson Hawks offense was to effective at getting the ball to the paint and getting high percentage baskets. They only made one three point basket all game, and it came from Ady Darnold.

With this win the Crimson Hawks move to 11-0 and the Lady Cardinals fall to 5-6 on the season.
