SPOKANE -- The Cheney Blackhawks boys basketall team had to again play one of the GSL’s best with an incomplete roster, losing at Ferris 72-50, on Friday, Jan. 28.
Cheney was still without their leading scorer and rebounder Evan Stinson.
Garrett Heutt was added to the coronavirus protocol list earlier in the day, but at full strength the “Hawks” would still have had a huge challenge.
Ferris has eight seniors on the roster and they all could be starters.
The Saxons are known for their tough defense and strong rebounding, especially on the offensive boards. These traits led Ferris to a 22-13 first quarter lead. 8 points, including 2 3 pointers by Owen Scott kept Cheney close.
Superior depth helped Ferris stay ahead in the second quarter, and the half ended with the Saxons up by 13.
In the third quarter, it was their defense again that helped the Saxons pull ahead by 17 points. The Blackhawks turned the ball over 6 times and had a tough time getting easy shots.
Despite having the strength of their senior class, it was sophomore Dylan Skaife that put the game away for Ferris.
Skaife scored 14 of his game leading 29 points in the fourth quarter.
Josh Whiteley hit a couple key 3s on the night, with Whiteley putting in 4, Scott 2, and freshman Carter Ittner and Tyler Ashcroft one each.
Alec Roland added 16 for Ferris.
Whiteley led Cheney with 19 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists.
Scott scored 10. The Blackhawks only managed to make 7-of-13 free throws. Cheney’s record is now 2-12.
