Cardinal wrestler continues winning streak

CHENEY – Medical Lake's Aden Carl went into the Cheney Invite as the number one seed in the 132 pound class, and increased his winning streak to 21-0 on the season by winning all of his matches on January 8.

After a bye round, Carl pinned Coen Caldwell from Cheney and then Kayden Cate from Omak. Carl faced Joe Showalter from Cheney and won by decision 6-4.

Andrew Roberts placed second highest for Medical Lake at 3rd and scored 19.0 team points in the 170-pound division.

Roberts received a bye for his first match, and then pinned Seth Bromley from North Central.

Roberts then faced Thayne Acedo from Cheney and was beaten. He then won by major decision over fellow Cardinal Austin Armstrong. In his final match of the day Roberts won by fall over Cheney's Bradley Golden.

Austin Armstrong went 2-2 during the tournament and placed 5th in the 170-pound class, and Armstrong received a bye for his first match.

He then lost to Jorge Mendoza from Wapato by major decision 15-7, and won his third match by fall over Devin Cruse of North Central.

Armstrong then received another bye and lost to Andrew Roberts also from Medical Lake by major decision 13-4. Armstrong then won by decision over Eduardo Hernandez Gonzalez from Grandview 9-4.

Cardinal Gavin Chaffee placed 5th in the 285 pound wrestlers and scored 13.0 team points.

Chaffee initially received a bye, and then won by fall over Cheney's Bradley Koonce. Chaffee then lost to Cotton Sears from Pullman and lost the following match by fall to Carter Grant of Mead High School. Chaffee then defeated Bradley Koonce of Cheney High School again by fall.

Tanner Sellers wrestled in the 138-pound class and did not place but scored 3.0 team points. Sellers lost his first match to Ivan Acosta from Pullman by fall. Sellers then won his second match over Tommy Snaza from Lakeside. Sellers lost his third match by fall to Andrew Boniecki of North Central.

Ian Steege did not place in the 182-pound class but scored 4.0 team points for the Cardinals. Steege won his first match by fall over Rafael Hernandez from Wapato but lost the following matches.

Steege lost to Eli Richards from Bonners Ferry by pin fall but was pinned by Octavio Roman-Lopez from Cheney High School in his third match.

Dakota Phillips competed in the 145-pound class but did not place or score team points. Phillips lost his first match by fall to Julian Sanchez from Grandview and was also pinned by Mead's Tyler Vandeventer.

Clinton Zimmerman at 152 pounds also lost his first two matches. Zimmerman initially lost to Austin Turner from Clarkston by fall. Zimmerman was then defeated by Isaac Roberts of North Central.

Sheehan Connors was unable to place or score team points in the 160-pound class. Connors lost his first match to Jonathan Rojas-Aguilar from Quincy by fall, and was then pinned by Omak's Derik Gomis.

In the 195-pound class, True Cole did not place and was unable to score any team points. Cole received a bye for his first match, but then lost to Carson Durbin from Reardan. Cole received another bye and lost to Christian Avila from Quincy by decision 5-3.

Assistant coach Tory Carl said, "The team fought hard and showed continued improvement. Missing six wrestlers impacted the team's ability to place higher in the tournament standings."

Next week Medical Lake will host Freeman on January 13, and then travel to Post Falls to compete in the River City Duals.
