Soccer team slated to play Peninsula
SPOKANE – The Cheney girls soccer team punched its ticket to the Class 3A state tournament Saturday, Nov. 6, by knocking off Mead, 2-0.
The Blackhawks scored with 33 minutes left in the first half to take a 1-0 lead. Their second score came with 36 minutes left in the game.
Individual stats were not reported.
Cheney had 7 shots on goal, while the Mead Panthers had 6.
The victory avenges a 3-2 loss to the Panthers on Oct. 1. It also gave the Blackhawks its first trip to the Class 3B state tournament.
Cheney was scheduled to take the field at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, against No. 15-seed Peninsula (7-5) at Peninsula High School in Gig Harbor.
The Blackhawks (10-8) enter the game as the No. 18 seed.
The Peninsula Seahawks are coming off a 3-0 win Nov. 2 over Kentlake.
The winner of the Cheney-Peninsula game will advance to take on No. 2-ranked Holy Names Academy (10-1-2) of Seattle at 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12.
That game will take place at the Southwest Athletic Complex, 2600 S.W. Thistle St., Seattle.
