Bissell, Igbinoba lead Blackhawks in 47-23 win over Ontario

It’s hard to tell in a game of big plays which one was the biggest. In the end, the biggest thing for the Cheney football team was what the scoreboard read after 48 minutes: Cheney 47, Visitors 23, Or in this case “Eastern” not “Cheney” a the Blackhawks took to the red turf at Roo’s field last Friday to face the Tigers from Ontario, Ore.

There’s an exciting vibe on Friday nights in Medical Lake lately because their Cardinal football team has people talking. It’s not championship chatter by any means, but with three straight wins, including last Friday’s road victory 24-8 over the McLoughlin Pioneers, way down yonder in Milton-Freewater, Ore., the Cards’ 4-2 record sure beats what’s been going on over the last decade.

Downtown Cheney will spring to life tonight (Thursday) as First Street is transformed into a parade route and race course. The public is encouraged to turn out for the traditional Homecoming parade, which kicks off at 6:30 p.m., and then stick around for the bed races. The festivities are all geared around Eastern Washington University’s Homecoming Celebration, which is already in full swing.

West Plains drivers – whether it’s an experienced motorist seeking a 10th license renewal or a 16 year old nervously taking that first test – share one thing in common: a trip into Spokane to conduct their business. But that trip will soon be a thing of the past.

A full-service facility, for licensing both drivers and vehicles is coming to the West Plains. A spokesman for the state Department of Licensing said such a facility is expected to be built by January or February and will be found adjacent to the Washington State Patrol offices just north of Interstate 90.

The Sheep-Division of the East Cheney 4-H Club made a good showing in tough competition at the Spokane Junior Livestock Show held May 10-13. The youngsters, led by Mrs. Marilyn Elliot, won a blue ribbon with a third place in sheep herdsmanship.
