SPOKANE – The Medical Lake cross country boys and girls teams ran to victory over Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) and Riverside (Chattaroy) in the first league meet of the season for the Cardinals.

"Our boys defeated Lakeside, 26-29," Coach Gene Blankenship said. "But to be fair, Lakeside was missing two of their Top 5 five runners.

He said the Cardinal boys varsity boys team also defeated Riverside, 25-31, although the overall winner in the boys race was Jamal Distel of Riverside, who finished with a fast time of 15:41.

Medical Lake's Reid Headrick was second, blazing through the track in 16:42, with Connor Palmen finishing fourth overall for the Cardinals.

Seventh-place went to Sam Ornlelas, followed by Aden Carl in ninth-place, the coach said. Nakai Ornelas came in 14th, closely trailed by Hector Gomez in 15th.

The Cardinal junior-varsity boys team defeated Riverside, but came in second to Lakeside.

The team was led by Dominick Gifford, Blankenship said.

The varsity girls race ended with Medical Lake winning, 25-36,over Lakeside and 15-50 against Riverside.

Lakeside took first- and second-place overall, but Blankenship said Medical Lake grouped up and took the third- through ninth-place positions for the team win.

"Kylie was in third-place overall when she was almost hit by a car, forcing her to come to a complete halt, interrupting her rhythm. She still managed a seventh-place finish," Blankenship said.

The girls Junior varsity also won, 15-50, led by Sierra Harden.

Sam Ornelas and Grace Grubaugh won the Competitor of the Meet awards, and Cardinal pins went to Mickey McCollough, Dominick Gifford, Katie Hiatt, Nakai Ornlelas and Milan Contreras, the coach said.
