AIRWAY HEIGHTS – Fairchild Airforce Base made history Sept. 29 when they successfully completed a minimal interval take-off exercise with 20 KC-135 Stratotankers.

Each refueler weighs more than 98,000 pounds when empty and nearly 300,000 pounds at max capacity, officials said

The 92nd Air Refueling Wing completed the exercise, and the planes were prepped and inspected by airmen from the 92nd Maintenance Group, officials said.

The planes lined up in a formation called the “elephant walk” and then proceeded to take off one after another.

This exercise was done to help encourage support for Global Reach for America, and demonstrated the strategic mission capabilities of the base and the aircraft fleet that is more than 60 years old, officials said.
