SPOKANE – Former Cheney fire Lt. Cody Traber was killed in the line of duty Aug. 26 after falling from a bridge in north Spokane while serving with Spokane County Fire District No. 9.
At the time of his death, Traber, an 18-year veteran of the department, was attempting to “gain a better vantage point” on a brushfire when he was “fatally wounded” in the fall, officials said.
Traber served with the Cheney Department from 2002-03.
The local community expressed sympathy in hundreds of Facebook comments throughout the week.
One read: “Cody, I am honored to have stood watch over you yesterday, glad that I was able to say ‘see you on the other side’ in person, sad that we won’t be able to give each other grief on assignments anymore, and my heart is full of sorrow for those who are missing you. Rest easy Brother and see you later.”
Traber was also honored at the Northeast Washington Fair by the Spokane C.O.P.S Mounted Patrol with a riderless horse, “to symbolize a warrior who would ride no more.”
“Cody leaves behind his wife, Allisyn, and four young children,” District No. 9 Chief Jack Cates said.
“Please keep Cody and his family in your thoughts as we all navigate through this difficult time.”
