Medical Lake School discusses new policies

MEDICAL LAKE – The School Board discussed a trio of new policies Aug. 24 regarding student learning programs, personal records and fees.

The board also talked about facility readiness and final preparations before campuses reopens for the year.

Policy No. 2108 was discussed on first reading; it is based around Learning Assistance Programs.

Officials said it would help identify students who are not meeting expectations.

The integration of student support protocols as part of the policy shows 15% of the school’s funding would be usable as LAP funds, officials said. The program will identify what services are offered, and how many students can benefit from these services.

Policy No. 3231 was next on the agenda and, if applied, will present a situation in which student diplomas and records can’t be held due to certain charges or fines, officials said.

Facility readiness was also a topic of concern.

Chad Moss spoke regarding the facility readiness and some new installations for schools this year.

Moss said through the summer the custodial and maintenance crews have been working to improve the facilities. Finished projects include a new playground for the elementary school along with a fresh coat of paint in the library. Middle and high school students will see various improvements, such as some new televisions , he said.

Moss continued to explain how the old wrestling room has been converted to a weight room for this year also.

A school achievement brought Assistant Superintendent for ESD1, Mick Miller forward to speak to the board. Approaching the stage, Miller brought forth the District Accreditation Plaque that was awarded to Medical Lake High School.

This was awarded in part because of the eight schools chosen for accreditation last year, only Medical Lake High School renewed its accreditation.
