Interchange work moves from SR 902 to Geiger Boulevard

SPOKANE COUNTY — Construction along Interstate 90 recently shifted a bit more towards the city of Spokane as crews wrapped up work at the I-90/Medical Lake interchange and began reconstruction earlier this spring of the I-90/Geiger Boulevard interchange.

Work on the $6.15 million project at exit 276 began April 12, and includes construction of three roundabouts along with revised on/off ramps, better illumination and erosion control, pavement markings, permanent signage and traffic control.

The three roundabouts will be built in phases, with the first constructed at the westbound I-90 on and off ramps with Grove Road. This will be followed by the eastbound on and off ramps roundabout, with the third constructed at the Geiger Boulevard/Grove Road intersection.

According to the Washington State Department of Transportation’s project website, as of June 1 the westbound loop ramp is permanently closed. The westbound I-90 off-ramp and the westbound I-90 on-ramp have reopened.

Drivers can also travel south on Grove Road across I-90 to access the eastbound I-90 loop on-ramp. Drivers will not have access south of the ramp on Grove Road.

The eastbound on and off-ramps to and from I-90 remains closed to traffic along with northbound travel on Grove Road across I-90. Crews are working on completing the permanent striping at the westbound ramp roundabout.

Further west on I-90, the $20.32 million project work at exit 272, Medical Lake/State Route 902, started in June 2019 is wrapping up. The bridge work is complete with the exception of railing installation and some repair work on the old bridge.

The new bridge is open in a temporary lane configuration between the eastbound and westbound ramps. All paving and ramp construction is complete with the exception of permanent striping.

All ramps and roundabouts are open to traffic. During the week of Monday, June 7, through Friday, June 11, crews will install a permanent barrier on the north side of the existing old bridge. Final cleanup and planting are ongoing and will be completed within the next month.

Also taking place on I-90 through the West Plains is grading and excavation work in the median from exit 270, Cheney/Four Lakes, to the Lincoln County line at milepost 255. Crews are excavating and removing rock and installing guardrails and concrete barriers throughout this 15-mile stretch of the interstate. Excavation work is complete.

According to WSDOT, the $3.06 million project is designed to “reduce the risk and severity of run off the road collisions throughout the highway corridor by removing vertical rock cuts and outcrops from the median or by shielding the rock with a barrier.”
