The Medical Lake boys' tennis team emerged as the winners in the 2021 Northeast A League District Tournament staged May 7 and 8 at Riverside High School. RJ Puckett and Isaac Barr took second place in the doubles' tournament while Ryen Gibby and Cameron Dickey finished third.

MEDICAL LAKE - Medical Lake's boys' tennis team is adding some new awards to the trophy case outside the high school gym winning the Northeast A League District championship last week.

"This is the first trophy to enter the school's tennis trophy case in quite a few years," boys head coach Brian Tellez wrote in an email.

The two-day tournament played at Riverside High School saw Medical Lake get a pair of wins (including a bye) from Josh Burt in singles. That included a 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 win over Jayden Lentz (Freeman) that moved him to day-two. Tristan Francis also won twice in singles and advanced on a pair of 6-0 victories over Ben Chadduck (Freeman).

In doubles the Cards had RJ Puckett/Isaac Barr, Ryen Gibby/Cameron Dickey and Jonah Lindsey/Noah Young advance out of day-one. Day one of the tournament was successful, with eight team wins.

Day-two saw Puckett and Barr top Gibby and Dickey, 6-0, 6-4 in a battle of teammates before dropping a 4-6, 3-6 decision to Tony Hoffman and Dylan Kirk from Newport.

In another doubles match-up Gibby and Dickey rallied to defeat Tony Hoffman and Dylan Kirk from Newport, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 before they were beaten by Puckett and Barr, 6-0, 6-4.

In girls' competition, Henna VanDingenen and Aubrey Wiley qualified in singles, while Jasmine Lundberg/Alanyah Bender and Celina Mitchell/Skylar Devore all qualified but did not advance.

"All of these girls were playing in their first ever District Tournament, so it was really just about the experience," girls' head coach Dawn Eliassen said. "I asked them to remember where they were with their skills 5 weeks ago, and where they are now?"

In the conclusion of regular-season NEA play the ML boys split matches with Freeman, losing 3-2 on May 3 before edging Newport 3-2 the following day. The Cardinals finished 5-3. The girls dropped a 4-1 contest to Freeman and 5-0 to Newport and wind up with a 1-8 mark.
