Swimmers highlight Cheney sports action

CHENEY — The women’s swimming team remained unbeaten while the cross country squads finally found their way into the Greater Spokane League win column in competition last week. The Blackhawks football squads — American and European — also each collected their second wins of the season.

Cross country

Both Blackhawks men’s and women’s teams finally found their way into the GSL win column, and both against the same opponent — University High. The men edged the Titans 28-29 while the women cruised 24-31, but both lost to Mead 19-42 and 15-50 respectively at Salnave Park.

Beckett Schoenleber and Finnegan Syrie led the men, with Schoenleber setting a new season record of 16 minutes, 29.20 seconds to finish third overall while Syrie was sixth with a new personal record of 16:48.60. Samantha Habegger was 10th for the women in 21:32.40, also a season’s best, with Jaela Thornburg, Mayah Spakousky, Tenaya Belsby and Anna Richardson finishing 14th –17th.

Football

A third-quarter touchdown was all the scoring the Blackhawks football team could muster in their home-opener Friday night against 4A Lewis and Clark – and it was all they would need for the 7-6 win.

The Tigers used two fields goals, a 36-yarder in the first quarter and a 33-yarder at the 4:16 mark in the third for a 6-0. But with 13 seconds remaining in the quarter, quarterback Josh Whiteley found Ryan Reickmann for a 17-yard touchdown, with Josh Bingham’s extra point being the eventual margin of victory.

Cheney managed just 120 yards of total offense, most of it on the arm of Whiteley, who was 9 for 17 and 94 yards, with Reickmann making six catches for 53 yards. Ben McGourin rushed 13 times for 37 yards. The Blackhawks turned the ball over four times, two fumbles and two interceptions, and had 13 penalties for 105 yards against LC’s 16 for 150 yards.

Cheney goes to 2-2 overall while LC falls to 0-3.

Soccer

The Blackhawks got their second win of the season last Wednesday, shutting out Ferris 1-0 on the road March 17. Jordyn McFarland’s goal off an assist from Lauryn Woller in the 55th minute was the only score, with goalkeepers Irelyn DeWeese and Sydney Reagan making five and three saves respectively.

At home March 22, it was Cheney that couldn’t find the net against Mead. The Panthers scored in the 11th minute and got an own goal from the Blackhawks late for a 2-0 win. Mead outshot Cheney 6-5 in the defensive game, with DeWeese making five saves.

Cheney goes to 2-5 on the season.

Swimming

The Blackhawks women notched meet wins over Pullman and Clarkston last Thursday. Cheney defeated the Greyhounds 68-48 and cruised by the Bantams 83-20. The Blackhawks are 8-0 overall.

Volleyball

The Blackhawks earned a split in match play last week. On Tuesday, March 16, Cheney lost 3-0 to GSL leader Mt. Spokane, 25-11, 25-11 and 25-8 on the road. Sara Graham led Cheney with six assists while Emily Ek had six digs.

The team bounced back two nights later to down visiting 4A Lewis and Clark 3-1, winning 25-19, 25-12, 18-25 and 25-21. Avery Stark had 15 kills and five blocks, with Graham recording 17 assists and three aces, Ek 12 digs and Joy Assonken and Kiley Power three aces each.

Cheney improves their record to 3-6 overall.
