Medical Lake girls win first soccer match since 2018

MEDICAL LAKE — In the span of two days last week the Medical Lake girls soccer team not only scored their first goals of the season, but also recorded the program’s first victory on March 22, 4-3 at Colville. The win was the first for the program since Sept. 13, 2018 and a 3-2 win over Newport.

Ellie Acord scored two times while Jasmine Simmens scored once and had a pair of assists. Hailey Cross had the other goal in the win.

That followed a 4-3 loss to Newport in which Acord, Cross and Simmens for scoring their team’s first, second and third goals of the season. 

Earlier in the week the Cardinals dropped a 5-0 contest to Riverside and 10-0 to Deer Park.

“Most notable would be my team, they are working hard and playing through injuries and inexperience but battling every day,” interim head coach Dan Collins wrote in an email. He singled out the work of Sarah Firestone and Alanyah Bender “For their exemplary play on Saturday defending throughout the game.”

Also in that 4-3 loss to Newport, Collins pointed out, “The outcome of the game Saturday doesn’t come close to describing the energy, effort, and excellent teamwork of our whole team.”

The Cardinals faced off against Lakeside March 24.

Volleyball

Medical Lake scored its second victory of the season last week with a 3-0 decision against Newport (W 25-21, W 23-25, W 25-10), improving to 2-4 on the season. The week started with a 3-1 loss to Deer Park (L 22-25, L 23-25, W 25-16, L 20-25) and 3-0 to Lakeside (L 25-11, L 25-15, L 25-8).

“Last week Rylie Spring and Amblessed Okemgbo really stood out in taking change during tough situations,” head coach Darci Mock wrote in an email. 

Okemgbo sent over six aces against Newport helping the Cardinal’s to a set-one win. Spring took charge on the court in the change rotation with Deer Park and Lakeside. 

“It is really exciting to see a team come together in such a challenging time,” Mock said. “Exciting things will continue to happen for them.”

Up next is a re-match at Riverside on March 23 where the Cards won their opener 3-0 on March 9.

Football

Lakeside (2-0) scored 20 points in each of the first two quarters on the way to a 46-0 Northeast A League winter/spring football victory March 19 in Suncrest.

Joe Griffey had 11 carries and 55 yards for the winless (0-3) Cardinals who next face Freeman (0-3) at home Thursday, April 1.

Cross Country

Medical Lake cross country had the week off but returns to competition at Colville March 27.
