Eastern's Goffard, Winston named players of the week

FARMINGTON, Utah — A pair of Eastern Washington University soccer seniors have been named the Big Sky Conference Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office March 1.

McKaley Goffard earned the offensive nod for the first time in her career, while Kelsee Winston picked up the defensive award for the fourth time. The duo helped the Eagles shutout the College of Idaho, 5-0, at Roos Field on Feb. 28 for their home-opener to bounce back from a 2-0 loss at Gonzaga earlier in the week.

Goffard, who was named Second Team All-Big Sky last season, tallied a goal and an assist in Eastern’s win on Sunday with two total shots to earn three points.

Winston is Eastern Washington’s career record holder in shutouts, and picked up her 15th in the win against the Yotes. She faced two shots and saved both — as she now has 191 career saves to rank sixth all-time in program history. Winston was in the posts for 74 minutes of the match to pick up her first victory of the season in net.

Goffard hails from Kennewick, Wash., and she has started all three matches this season, logging 255 minutes on the pitch. The goal and the assist were both the second of her career and three points in a match is a new career-high.

Winston is from Pasco, Wash., and she has started also started all three matches as goalkeeper with 255 minutes between the posts. In EWU’s season-opener at Washington State on Feb. 12, she notched a career-high 13 saves and made seven against Gonzaga.

Eastern Washington returns to action at home on March 12 and March 14 when it hosts Portland State for the start of Big Sky play.
