ROSALIA — Voters in this rural Whitman County community are supporting a ballot measure to convert two School Board seats to at-large positions.

In an initial tally of Tuesday's special election, School District voters were supporting the idea, 65% to 35%.

The measure would change the five, in-district School Board seats to three in-district and two at-large seats.

Whitman County officials estimate they have an additional 230 votes to count today, Wednesday, Feb. 10, but did not say how many were in the district and how many were in other special elections in the county.

Elsewhere in the Whitman County, the Lamont and Colton school districts were both asking voters to approve replacement levies.

In Lamont, only 41% of voters were supporting, 59% opposing, a two-year replacement levy of $2.50 per $1,000 of assessed property valuation by a vote of 19 yes to 13 no.

The measure would have collected $130,000 next year and $132,000 in 2023. The owner of a $200,000 home here would be pay $500 each year.

In southern Whitman County, 71% of Colton School District voters were supporting a one-year replacement levy of $2.36 per $1,000 of assessed valuation.

As of press time, the initial tally was 152 votes in favor and 63 opposed.

The levy would cost the owner of a $200,000 home $472 next year. It would bring in an estimated $398,947 for the district.

The Whitman County Canvassing Board will review and certify the early results as well as any late-arriving ballots Feb. 19.
