Eagle women lose in net action at Gonzaga

SPOKANE —The Eastern Washington University women’s tennis team traveled to nearby Spokane to take on Gonzaga Jan. 17 and fell short of notching their first match win, dropping the decision 5-2 to begin the new season. The Eagles found some success defeating GU 2-1 in doubles play but could not respond in singles play.

“This was a good start to the season and while we didn’t come away with the team win, I saw a lot to build upon, head coach Dustin Hinson said. “We played really well in doubles at all three spots to start the match and came away with the doubles point. I was proud of the intensity and effort we brought to singles as well with a really great win for Renata Gabuzyan at number six singles.”

The Bulldogs won the first five singles matches in straight sets each, results as follows:

Kate Ketels def. Scout Mathews (6-0, 6-1)

Adrianna Sosnowska def. Jennifer Kida (6-3, 6-1)

Cate Broerman def. Zoey Nelson (6-3, 6-1)

Haruna Tsuruta def. Rylee Braeden (6-2, 6-1)

Jenna Sloan def. Louse Waite (7-5, 7-6(3))

Renata Gabuzyan def. Hannah Jones (0-6, 7-6(5), 6-2).

In doubles action, Nelson and Braeden teamed to defeat Ketels and Sosnowska 6-3, while Mathews and Kida downed Broerman and Sloan, 6-4. Waite and Gavuzyan lost the No. 3 match to Tsuruta and Jones, 6-4.

“We have a couple weeks to continue working on our games before the next matches,” Hinson said of the team’s initial effort this season. “We will use that time to continue developing confidence in our match play moving forward.”

EWU is back in action Saturday (Jan. 30) at Washington State in Pullman, with first serve set for 3 p.m. Pacific time.
