Spokane Tribe begins casino expansion

AIRWAY HEIGHTS – The Spokane Tribe of Indians broke ground in early December 2020 on its planned casino expansion.

The 20,000-square-foot expansion will double the casino's current size, providing not only additional gamin amenities but also a new restaurant, doubling the size of the bar, Whaluks - one of three current restaurants - and increasing the non-smoking section. Details on the new restaurant are scheduled to be released at later date, as are additional expansion plans.

In a news release, Spokane Tribe officials said the expansion of the casino located on U.S. Highway 2 west of Airway Heights should produce an estimated 300-plus construction and regular casino jobs. The general contractor selected for the project is Swinerton Builders, with the Cunningham Group working as the project architect.

To make way for the expansion the Tribe demolished the east parking lot earlier in December. Construction is projected to be completed later in 2021.

The project is part of the Tribe's larger endeavor, the Spokane Tribe Economic Development Plan – also known as STEP.

On Jan. 8, the Tribe celebrated the third anniversary of the opening of its Airway Heights casino. The casino is located in the heart of the Spokane Tribe's three million-plus acre ancestral homelands.
