Cardinal state champ to wrestle at San Francisco State

MEDICAL LAKE—Two-time individual state champion Ethan Davis, a senior who has grown up here his whole life, is heading to the Bay Area to wrestle collegiately for the San Francisco State University Gators. Davis announced the signing on National Signing Day, Dec. 15.

Davis, a 17-year-old senior this year, won the individual 1A state title for the 170-lb weight class his freshman year in 2018 and his junior year in 2020. He said he’s most proud of his second state title, which he won after being forced to sit out much of his sophomore season due to a broken pelvis.

“I had to earn my state title my junior year,” Davis said. “That was pretty big for me.”

Davis is looking forward to working with San Francisco State’s young coaches, head coach Jason Welch and assistant Dominic Kastl. Both are in their fourth season with the Gators and are the reason Davis chose the school after being contacted by more than 30 schools, he said.

“I really like the young coaching staff and the location,” Davis said. “I think I can be happy and productive in the Bay Area.”

Davis will compete on a half-scholarship.

The Gators’ wrestling team competes in Division II NCAA athletics in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The schools’ other sports compete in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

The team went 7-9 in a 2019-20 season cut short by COVID-19-related cancellations.

Davis, meanwhile, will finish his senior year of high school while hoping an albeit-shortened season happens. Wrestling, a winter sport, is currently scheduled to begin Feb. 1, though the WIAA has routinely pushed back the start of seasons due to COVID-19 concerns and few 1A schools are seeking sporting options independent of the organization.

Then, the red-haired two-time state champ will leave the city he’s called home since kindergarten for the Bay Area in August, 2021.
