Spokane Valley man charged with vehicular assault

AIRWAY HEIGHTS – A Spokane Valley man was charged with reckless driving in a Friday, Dec. 12, afternoon collision that injured a city of Spokane couple.

According to a Washington State Patrol press memo, a white 2012 Ford Escape driven by 29-year-old Duckhein S. Joseph of Spokane Valley was eastbound on U.S. Highway 2 at approximately 3:20 p.m. Joseph was apparently speeding and passing traffic in the center median when he struck a westbound 2019 Honda Ridgeline head on driven by 73-year-old David E. Strand as it sat in the center median attempting to make a turn onto southbound Spotted Road near the Longhorn Barbecue Restaurant.

Both Joseph and Strand’s passenger, 65-year-old Lois E. Strand were injured in the collision and transported to local medical centers — Strand to Sacred Heart and Joseph to Deaconess. David Strand sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

State Patrol investigators determined alcohol was involved in the collision as well, and have charged Joseph with vehicular assault. Both vehicles were totaled and towed from the scene.
