New state guidelines wave red flag on motor sport events

OLYMPIA — A recent update to proclamations concerning outdoor recreation for counties in Phases 1 and 2 of the state’s re-opening plan has pumped the brakes on many motor sport events and related activities.

Gov. Jay Inslee’s Aug. 24 update to the proclamation declared that counties in Phase 1 or 2, which includes Spokane County, aren’t allowed to have active go-kart tracks, ORV facilities, Motocross facilities, raceways and other participant-only motor sports. The proclamation also bans spectators, spectator camping, spectator racing and spectator events.

The proclamation was originally enacted May 14. At the time, Go-kart tracks, ORV/motocross facilities and participant-only motorsports were allowed under Phase 1 and 2 provided that the facilities followed health and safety guidelines in accordance with the Department of Health’s recommendations. The proclamation also required these facilities to adopt a written procedure detailing these guidelines.

The May 14 proclamation is still in place for outdoor tennis facilities, guided ATV, horseback riding, fishing and paddle sports, as well as zoos, aquariums and gondolas.
