There are some successes battling Covid-19

Lately it seems that I hear or encounter the words that America has “totally failed” in mitigating the devastating effects of Covid-19. Mathematically, this statement is flawed as the CDC website as of today (7/24) shows: U.S. cases = 4,166,788; deaths = 147,324; recovered = 1,242,870.

Using CDC’s figures, America has had a 3.5 percent deaths rate based on the number of diagnosed cases shown. While — no matter the disease — loss of life is regrettable, it does not seem that a 3.5 percent figure represents failure in response to a virus unknown to the medical community at the start of this year. Rather, that we could all be proud of what collectively has been achieved in addressing an unknown enemy in the form of a germ.

IF we say America’s leadership has failed, then in the case of the pandemic we are not actually limiting it to the president but to every aspect of Covid-19 health care response (state governors who with state health officials decide all state protocols, mayors who decide for their cities, Dr. Fauci, Dr. Birx, the CDC, the FDA, WHO, doctors, health care workers, etc.).

Have there been mistakes? Undoubtedly.

Regrets? Of course.

Treatment disagreements? Certainly.

No matter who is involved, mistakes will and often do take place.

Personally, I’m very grateful for (1) all the success America has attained so far in combating Covid-19, and (2) for the CDC website which provides needed “fill-in” information to evening news reporting.
